About Me

A family medicine physician, Dr. Colgan’s specialties are infections in primary care and humanism—the respect and compassion healthcare providers show their patients and colleagues—in medicine.

Dr. Colgan completed his family medicine residency at University of Maryland Medical Center. He has been active in the Maryland Academy of Family Physicians, serving in many leadership roles, including president.

Dr. Colgan is a professor and executive vice chairman of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM). He is also director of UMSOM’s Academic Community Programs, including the Maryland Area Health Education Center and Executive Health. He received the Golden Apple award for teaching excellence and has been inducted into both the Gold Humanism Honor Society and Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society.

Dr. Colgan has written more than 80 scientific articles. He is also the author of two books, Advice to the Healer: On the Art of Medicine and Advice to the Healer: On the Art of Caring. He has been named a “Top Doctor” by Baltimore magazine and other national organizations.

Dr. Colgan is a retired colonel in the States Militia (10th Medical Regiment, Maryland Defense Force).
