About Me

Silke Niederhaus, MD is the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery. She received her medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine and completed her surgical residency and a two-year research fellowship at the University of Wisconsin.

Following residency, Dr. Niederhaus completed a two-year transplant surgery fellowship in abdominal transplantation, also at the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. Niederhaus specializes in kidney and pancreas transplantation, laparoscopic and single-port donor nephrectomy, and dialysis access. She has published a number of papers and abstracts, many centering on organ transplants, organ donors and recipients.

Dr. Niederhaus is a kidney transplant recipient herself. Her first kidney transplant lasted for over 30 years. She needed a second kidney transplant in 2019, for which she was able to find a living donor through a paired kidney exchange. Her experiences as a transplant recipient allow Dr. Niederhaus to bring a unique perspective to transplantation.
